An 18 year old girl who was born and raised on American soil faces stereotypes on a daily basis. People believe that the young adult is a US citizen, but what confuses them is her ethnicity. No matter what the girl does or how she does it, society has already labeled her identity based on appearance. Majority of people do not believe that the girl is mostly Filipino as she gets remarks for example, “Oh I didn’t notice because of your skin tone and eyes.” These type of comments confuse the young female because she does not understand how looking a certain way determines a person’s ethnicity, as if each nationality is easily distinguishable. The adolescent has been labeled as a Caucasian or Native American because people assume all Caucasians and Native Americans have pale skin and big eyes. It seems as if society does not genuinely accept who the young female is because she does not have the same complexion as a “typical” Filipino.

The music video, Pretty Hurts, by Beyonce marks a message that impacts women to ignore the labels that society has plastered on females. Beauty pageant contestants are perceived as pleasant people who want to show how great their body is. However, in the video, the contestants are displaying the truth about how looking “perfect” can damage the souls of women. Pretty Hurts presents big smiles on the models' faces, but they act fatigue and grumpy when away from the spotlight. Beyonce plays as a model contestant who is forced to maintain a certain weight and have “correct” posture. As she mistreats herself by taking pills and throwing up, there is sadness in her eyes.
Beyonce’s music video inspire females when she says that her ambition is to be happy and then the next scene shows her smashing trophies. It proves that people should not live life under societies’ needs. As Beyonce says, “It’s the soul that needs the surgery,” illustrates that people need to change a certain way for themselves instead for social standards. People need to find happiness by accepting who they are and embracing their flaws. An example is when Beyonce genuinely smiles after losing in the pageant competition. She shows that it is normal to lose because perfection does not exist. In the 18 year old's case, the video influences her to tolerate society’s assumptions on appearance. It may not seem like she is Filipino, but she is proud of her ethnicity. The female adolescent is not going to let society decide who she is, instead she will show the filipino culture to the world.
